VIOLET HAMILTON: A PHOTOGRAPHER'S LIFE

Violet Hamilton was an artist and photographer whose work captured both a unique time in the social history of Sydney, and the birth of Australian rock and roll.

Throughout her life she immersed herself within different cultures. In the early 1970s Violet lived and studied in Darlinghurst, in what is now the National Art School, and was a part of the burgeoning avant-garde scene. She witnessed and documented the growing, increasingly popular and lucrative rock and roll scenes of the 1970s, as well as the coming of age of Sydney.

This was a period of social and cultural revolution.

Violet’s work is a rare glimpse into the history of 1970s Sydney, surveying the underground scenes that could only be seen through the lens of an insider.
